Tolko Improvements:
Tolko Industries Ltd., Kraft Papers Division, has seen a number of changes in technological processes over the past 3 years. Combined with capital infusion, this has resulted in production increases and a lowering of costs allowing the mill to become more efficient and cost effective.
- Installation of steam traps, heat exchangers and boiler modifications has resulted in a reduction of fossil fuel usage of 18 million litres/year or 40% of prior volumes.
- Automation and elimination of non-essential processes has allowed us to restructure and reduce manning by 20%.
- Further work on the spoiler bars, deckle board, headbox and stock approach, as well as, stock cleaner and washer drum up-grades have all resulted in a brighter, cleaner, more consistent sheet. Thus providing a product with improved edges, appearance and performance.
- Investment of this capital in the pulp and paper groups has increased production by 70 tons per day or 18%.

Canfor Improvements:
Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership has spent several million dollars over the last few years on enhancements to the paper machine improving sheet formation, profile and printability.
- New equipment installed in October ’07, utilizing the breast roll shake technology, has resulted in a dramatic improvement in our formation.
- Upgrading of the drainage elements and control strategy on the Fourdrinier, has improved the profile of the paper web.
- Investments have been made in print quality monitoring equipment to ensure our customers receive paper with high quality printing characteristics.
Investment in the steam plant area included rebuilding a recovery boiler into a waste wood-fired boiler which is used to power a 60 megawatt turbo-generator that provides most of the electricity requirements for the mill. This upgrade has allowed the mill to reduce the TRS emissions by about 50%, fine particulate by over 25%, and has eliminated our need to burn natural gas.
